Child Autism Referral Process

This web page explains how to get an autism assessment for your child, including the option for them being referred to a 'Right to Choose' (RTC) provider

Process for referral

You have a choice whether your child is referred under the NHS or via a private provider (paid for by the NHS) under the ‘Right to Choose’ initiative.

Information about the Right to Choose scheme can be found here:

https://onedevon.org.uk/our-work/services-and-support/mental-health/right-to-choose-autism-adhd-assessment-faqs/

A general guide for Right to Choose referrals is that assessments can be in as little as 12 weeks and as long as 12 months, which is much quicker than the NHS alternatives. Waiting times vary depending on provider and you would need to research this before deciding where you would like to be referred.

2. Complete relevant forms from your chosen provider and pass them to your GP

Complete the forms you are asked to complete on the RTC provider’s website.

Submit an online (Anima) request for your child to be referred for an autism assessment stating your chosen RTC provider. You can attach the completed forms to your request, drop them in to reception, or email them to us at  e.yealmmedicalcentre@nhs.net  (note this email address is not to be used for any other medical requests).

Once we have your forms and we know who you’d like to be referred to, we will complete the referral on your behalf. You will be contacted directly by the provider for an appointment in due course.

If you would like your child to be assessed by the NHS you can refer them yourself. Please see this website to guide you through the process: https://www.devon.gov.uk/children-families-education/send-local-offer/understanding-send/communication-and-interaction/autism/
